The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for the formulation and administration of Zambia’s Foreign Policy. The Ministry is also responsible for the establishment and maintenance of Zambia’s International Relations. The Ministry also coordinates the signing of treaties (Agreements and Conventions), pledges and contributions to the United Nations Agencies and other International Organisations.
Membership of Zambia and contact with International and Regional Organisations is a responsibility vested in the Ministry. The Ministry coordinates Zambia’s Diplomatic and Consular Missions Abroad.
In order to cultivate a cadre of Career Diplomacy and efficient and effective implementation of Zambia’s Foreign Policy and to contribute diligently to Zambia’s sustainable development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for Foreign Service Training.
In order to put into service this mammoth responsibility, the Ministry has six (6) Departments and forty-two (42) missions abroad.
Two of these departments, namely the Zambia Anti-personnel Mines Action Centre and the Zambia Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies are Statutory Bodies.
As one of the functions of the Ministry’s Protocol Department, the Ministry is charged with the responsibility taking care of Zambian Nationals living abroad. This among other things involves repatriation of destitute Zambian nationals from foreign countries. The Ministry through missions abroad is encourages Zambian in foreign countries to form Associations of Zambians Living Abroad.
The Ministry makes sure that members of the Diplomatic Corps in Zambia enjoy their immunities and privileges in order to realize their mandates and enjoy a smooth tour of duty in Zambia.
